Monitoring settings

On this page, you can decide what kind of information you want STAR to log. The following examples are based on the interactive HTML report.

Visual Monitoring

Screenshot: STAR takes picture of the PC desktop just like a surveillance camera. When planning your security setup. You should keep in mind that screenshots occupy much more hard disk space then the text logs. All screen shots are stored encrypted in the directory of the STAR log file.

If the computer is idle STAR does not make any screenshots. If the user starts working again STAR continues making screenshots.
Note: The screenshots are completed embedded in the interactive HTML log file, thus you can search for specific screenshots with keywords. You can also view them in the “Report Manager”.

Text Monitoring

STAR records text transcripts of all-important activities:

Active Application

The title of the front application is logged whenever it changes. In the HTML output log file, a green background is used for the first appearance. If the title subsequently changes but the application is still the same, the title is presented with a yellowish background. The third value, [1:05] in this example indicates how long the application was used before the user switched to the next application. In this case, Word was used with the "STAR" document for one hour and five minutes.
13:54 [1:05] Microsoft Word: STAR.doc

13:56 [0:04] Microsoft Word: resume.doc

Keystrokes & passwords

Logs what is typed on the keyboard.
Dear Sirs,
STAR works great!
Regards, Lawrence Tan

Visited web sites

Logs the URL of visited website as a real life link. This allows you to just click on the link in the log file to display the visited page in your browser!

Shell Notifications

Logs what has changed in the shell. For example STAR logs when a new printer is added in the Printers folder, a connection is deleted in the Dial-Up Networking folder, folders or files are moved, deleted or renamed, registered files are opened and items are added/removed from the recent (Documents) menu, the recycled bin is added to or emptied or a scheduled task is added, deleted or modified. Note: Any modifications in the C:\Windows\History folder will not be logged!
00:49:58 A file has been deleted: C:\Windows\Help.doc

00:50:11 A folder has been created: C:\Test

Time stamp

Useful to monitor working habits, STAR will "stamp" the log files even if not other activities occur, e.g. while you are out for lunch. You can set the time interval of the "stamp" in minutes.

Autostart

Enable this option if you want that the logging engine automatically start with every PC Boot.
